Iron in a Vegan Diet
Iron is a chemical metal. It’s also an essential element for nearly all forms of life, including humans.
Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, a blood disorder. If too much iron is injested, however, it can reach toxicity and cause health problems.
Vegan sources of iron include:
- Tofu
- Lentils
- Beans
- Dark leafy vegetables
- Chickpeas
Some cereals and breads are also fortified with iron.
Iron is also available in supplements, but a doctor should be consulted when taking iron supplements to avoid injesting too much iron.
